A new study recently revealed that the improving economy has led to an increase in the number of couples filing for divorce, an article published by the Huffington Post on Tuesday, January 28 reported.
According to the study authored by University of Maryland sociologist Philip Cohen, divorce rates decreased during the recession due to high cost of the legal process. In 2008 a decline of 20.9 divorces in 1000 women was recorded and it continued to dip until 2009. However, in 2010 divorce rates started to increase as the economy improved.
Sociologist Andrew Cherlin supported Cohen’s research by saying the trend happened previously during the Great Depression where couples, at the time, couldn’t afford the cost of getting a divorce.

The parents of Jessica and Ashlee Simpson, Joe and Tina Simpson, have recently announced that they will be ending their marriage. Tina filed divorce papers in Texas on Sept. 24 and cited “discord or conflict of personalities” as the reason for the divorce. The couple has been married for 34 years.
Rumors surrounding the couple have alleged that Joe Simpson participated in an extramarital affair with a 21-year-old male model. Reps for the family have stated that the couple’s divorce is friendly and that a third party was not involved.
Sources have shared that Jessica Simpson is coping well with the situation, but she is very sad.
The Simpsons have been in the news multiple times over the past few months, first when Joe Simpson was arrested for a DWI in August and more recently when the couple put their Los Angeles home on the market. The family has also requested privacy during this stressful time.

A study involving thousands of Norwegian married couples shows that divorce rates are higher for married couples that share housework equally. About 25% of the couples who participated in the study divided housework equally.
The findings show that in 71% of marriages, women do more of the household chores. This group has a lower divorce rate than the couples who split housework evenly.
The group with the highest divorce rates were the couples in which men did most of the household chores. Researchers in the study have stated that the evidence shows that “gender equality in the home does little to protect against divorce.”

The divorce rates among baby boomers is increasing even though other divorce rates are beginning to level out. According to research done at Bowling Green University, the number of divorce cases for couples over 50 has gone from one in every 10 to one in every four.
Officials have stated that there are many reasons why more and more couples over 50 are getting a divorce, but longer life spans and more emphasis on ‘self-fulfillment’ and ‘happiness’ are two reasons that researchers have noted.
Now that life spans are averaging around 80, after people retire at 60 or 65, they realize they have much more life to live and may want to get out of unhappy marriages if needed.
