Residents in Tyler held a candlelight vigil in order to remember those who have been victims of domestic violence and to honor those who have stood up to put an end to it.
The vigil took place in downtown Tyler in order to remember the 142 people that were killed as a result of domestic violence situations in 2010 throughout the state of Texas.
Officials with the East Texas Crisis Center have said that domestic violence is not just physical abuse, but also mental and emotional abuse. Misconceptions of domestic violence are that it may not be a big deal, when in reality, it is a life- threatening issue.
Domestic violence may start off small and escalate to a more large scale issue. If the issue increases slowly over time, it can result in a very dangerous situation. The vigil is hosted in downtown Tyler so that all of the residents will see it and use it a as reminder that domestic violence is a serious issue that affects residents in their community.
