What is the difference between a legal separation and a divorce?

A legal separation is similar to a divorce in that a court grants a couple the status of being legally separated and divides property, rules on alimony, decides child custody/child support, and sets visitation rights. The only difference is that an actual divorce is not granted. Legal separations are fairly uncommon but some couples use this method because of religious, personal, or financial reasons.
